CD in latest edition of Songlines

In the latest edition of Songlines, you'll find a brand new compilation CD, consisting of some of the brightest stars to appear on the Folkelarm stage. "Traditional music from Norway" features twenty Norwegian artists from the Nordic Showcase Festival in Oslo, providing a musical overview of what's going on in Norway today.

1. PER ANDERS BUEN GARNÅS

Per Anders Buen Garnås is one of the very best Hardanger fiddle players in Norway. His newly released record, Seljord anno 1935, literally travels back in time, allowing us to meet up with some of the most acclaimed fiddlers of days gone by.  Per Anders Buen Garnås played at Folkelarm in 2009, and was nominated for best Solo performance at the Norwegian Folk Music Awards in 2011.

2. SUDAN DUDAN

Sudan Dudan is the duo of Marit Karlberg (vocals, norwegian zither) and Anders E. Røine (guitar, vocals). With a wide range of musical influences they’ve created a unique sound, working their way trough the material of traditional ballads, shanties and lullabies. Sudan Dudan played at Folkelarm 2011.

3. VALKYRIEN ALLSTARS

Valkyrien Allstars have become hugely popular in Norway. The trio of Tuva Livsdatter Syvertsen (vocal, hardanger fiddle), Ola Hilmen (hardanger fiddle, vocal), Erik Sollid ( bass fiddle, hardager fiddle, vocals) has just released their third album, "Ingen hverdag", further bridging rock-oriented and folk-oriented audiences.

4. HEKLA STÅLSTRENGA

Hekla Stålstrenga in an acoustic folk rock band, based in Tromsø (In the north of Norway). They recently released their second album, and was a-listed on NRK (Norwegian broadcasting) with this single – Mannen og kona (the man and the wife). The five piece band of Anne Nymo Trulsen (vocals) Ragnhild Furebotten ( bass fiddle, fiddle, vocals) Tore Bruvoll ( guitar, banjo, vocals) Trond-Viggo Solås ( double bass, vocals) Ole Jacob Larsen ( drums), performed at Folkelarm in 2009.

5. CAMILLA GRANLIEN & KRISTIN SEVALDSEN

Song title: Synden, døden

Inspired by lyrics by one of Norway's most famous writers, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832 – 1910), Camilla Granlien and Kristin Sevaldsen released Aftenstemning earlier this year, using their own melodies and arrangements. Apart from Camilla Granlien (vocals) and Kristin Sevaldsen (sax) - Jo Fougner Skaansar (double bass), Harald Skullerud (percussion), Morten Reppesgård (piano, accordion), performs on this track. Camilla Granlien performed at Folkelarm 2011.

6. TINDRA

The Trio of Åshild Vetrhus (vocals) Jorun Marie Kvernberg (fiddle, vocals) and Irene Tillung (accordion, vocals) have dug out some of the song treasures of Rogaland County for the record Moder Norge, released earlier this year.  Tindra played at Folkelarm in 2010

7. SLAGR

Chamber folk trio Slagr, takes the traditional material into a minimalistic contemporary sphere. Shimmer is their second album, following Solaris (released 2007)  Slagr is: Anne Hytta (hardanger fiddle) Sigrun Eng (cello) Amund Sjølie Sveen (vibraphone)  Slagr performed at Folkelarm 2009.

8. JAN BEITOHAUGEN GRANLI

Jan Beitohaugen Granli is known as one our best dance play fiddlers. Lately he has taken his hardanger fiddle and his traditions from Valdres to the stage. Jan Beitohaugen Granli played at Folkelarm 2011.

9.  ASLAK O. BRIMI & ERLEND VIKEN

Aslak Brimi and Erlend Viken hold a position as two of the most appreciated fiddlers in Norway and in 2008 they joined forces in a duo format. They represent two different fiddle traditions; however their musical interaction bears no sign of differentness, but is rather characterized by an influential and interwoven power. Aslak O. Brimi & Erlend Viken performed at Folkelarm 2011.

10. RAGNHILD HEMSING

Ragnhild Hemsing has been rewarded with a number of international prizes for her work as a classical violinist, but is also a celebrated Hardanger fiddler. Ragnhild Hemsing performed together with dancer Hallgrim Hansegård in at Folkelarm 2011.

11. NILS ØKLAND

Fiddler and composer Nils Økland is a remarkable musician, performing on Hardanger fiddle, violin, and viola d’amore. He operates at the interface between Norwegian folk music, improvisation and contemporary music, and all his four albums ought to be looked upon as true milestones. On this track, from the album Bris (2004), Nils Økland is accompanied by Sigbjørn Apeland (harmonium) Nils Økland performed two showcases at Folkelarm 2011. One solo act, and one together with Sigbjørn Apeland.

12. GJERMUND LARSEN TRIO

Versatile and much lauded musician Gjermund Larsen has been collaborating with a host of different musicians in different projects. Gjermund Larsen Trio, featuring Andreas Utnem (harmonium) and Sondre Meisfjord (double bass), has existed since 2006. Gjermund Larsen Trio performed at Folkelarm in 2010.

13. KARL SEGLEM

Jazz and folk musician Karl Seglem has created his own unique sound built around his melodic tenor saxophone. On this track you can hear Håkon Høgemo (Hardanger fiddle), Olav Torget (guitars), Gjermund Silset (bass), Kenneth Ekornes (drums, percussion) and Erland Dahlen (percussion), with Seglem himself on goat horn and tenor saxophone. Karl Seglem won the Norwegian folk music award 2011, for his record Ossicles which was released late autumn 2010.

14.  NIKO VALKEAPÄÄ

Building on the musical heritage of the Sami culture, Niko Valkeapää is about to release his fourth album since his debut album in 2003. On this track Niko's vocals are accompanied by Georg Buljo (percussion, fender rhodes, flute), Per Willy Aaserud (trumpet), Birger Mistereggen (jew’s harp), Helge Harstad (bass), Tom Rudi Torjussen (drums, percussion). Niko performed at Folkelarm in 2008, winning two Norwegian folk music awards the same year.

15. KOUAME SEREBA & ERIK WØLLO

Kouame, originally from Ivory Coast, moved to Norway in 1983, and has played an important role in the Norwegian music scene. In addition to his solo projects he collaborates with musicians of many different styles; jazz, folk, contemporary, as well as traditional and modern African music. Kouame Sereba’s vocals are accompanied by
Erik Wøllo's guitar and programming on Bako, released in 2010. Kouame Sereba performed at Folkelarm in 2009.

16. KIM ANDRÉ RYSSTAD

Kim André Rysstad was voted young folk musician of the year in 2009. With an extraordinary voice within the  singing tradition of Telemark, Kim André has been predicted a bright future. He recently released his second album "Vegen". On the chosen track Kim André is accompanied by Trym Bjønnes (guitar), Knut Reiersrud (bass, steel guitar) and Anders Engen (percussion, drums, keyboards). Kim André Rysstad played at Folkelarm in 2011.

17. RAGNHILD FUREBOTTEN

Aldri på en søndag (Never on a Sunday) is fiddler Ragnhild Furebotten´s second solo album, following the acclaimed debut Endelig Vals (Finally Waltz). Her interpretations of traditional music from northern Norway, as well as her own compositions, are combined with stellar horn arrangements by two of Norway´s most celebrated jazz composers, making this a truly new musical experience. Ragnhild Furebotten performed at Folkelarm in 2011.

18. JORUN MARIE KVERNBERG

With a powerful fiddle style and a strong preasence on stage, fiddler Jorun Marie Rypdal Kvernberg is one of few folk musicians of today presenting the traditional fiddle music from Møre & Romsdal –her home district.  Jorun Marie is also known to be a charismatic story teller, which adds an extra element to her live performances. Jorun Marie Kvernberg showcased at Folkelarm in 2011.

Sver is Norwegian folk music’s “power band”, characterized by a high energy level, tight interplay, and creative contemporary arrangements, pointing traditional music in a new and exciting directiopn. Fruen is their second album. On this track track you’ll hear Vidar Berge (guitar, mandola), Anders Hall (fiddle, viola), Jens Linell (percussion), Olav Luksengard Mjelva (fiddle, Hardanger fiddle), Leif Ingvar Ranøien (diatonic button accordion). 20. P.A. RØSTADS ORKESTER

P.A. Røstad’s Orchestra’s specialty is rhythmic, driving traditional Norwegian old-time dance music. The orchestra features Einar Olav Larsen (fiddle), Petter Andreas Røstad (accordion), Bjørn Bakken (accordion), Villy A. Kvernmo (guitar), Bjørn Arild Aksnes (double bass). P.A. Røstads Orkester won a Norwegian folk music award in 2011.
