Eli Storbekken / Maros

- Dialogue with the voices of the past

Maros` music is based on the rich vocal traditions of the Østerdal area - the home region of vocalist Eli Storbekken. Life on the mountain farms developed a unique musical need – a need to call on the herd, which in turn led to a highly distinctive calling vocal style which in Norwegian is referred to as lokk. The lokk could be protective for animals and humans alike but could also be used as an expressive vehicle for each individual’s emotions. Even though the original purpose of the lokk is all but gone, the melodies linger on.

Eli Storbekken is one of the most established and experienced folk singers in Norway. She has a long and varied career in vocal folk music, and collaborates with musicians in a wide variety of genres. She has performed at festivals throughout Scandinavia and toured in Russia, Ukraine, United States, Iraq and Qatar.

Last year, the release ‘Maros’ won the Norwegian Folk Music Awards in the category "best group".
