Maija Kauhanen

Thursday 18:50 & Saturday 19:40

SHOWCASE:
Thursday: Taket 18:50
Saturday: Taket 19:40 - PULS Concert

Maija Kauhanen sings and plays kantele and percussion - at the same time! Organic beats, unique soundscapes and strong compositions weave together polyrhythmically in her ‘one-man orchestra’. The rural music traditions of Finland and Karelia are her most important sources of inspiration, and she breathes new life into old melodies and rare playing techniques.

Kauhanen was chosen to play at Womex in 2017, the year she released her first solo album "Raivopyörä" on the German label, Nordic Notes. The same year, she received a whole host of awards in her home country, Finland. She was awarded Newcomer of the Year at Ethnogala, received the "Kantele of the Year" from the Kantele Foundation and Emma Prize (Finnish Grammy) for her debut album.

With her strong stage presence, Kauhanen has toured as a solo artist in Asia, America, Scandinavia and Central Europe. She can also to be seen in the groups Folk'Avant and Okra Playground. With her powerful, expressive voice, she sings about different women's fates: challenging relationships, domestic violence and child marriage are portrayed, but there are also songs about joy, comfort, hope and love.
