Vegar Vårdal
Showcase 2017
Vegar Vårdal released his first solo album, Ukvessa slåtter, in March of this year. Through the album, he presents a picture of his first years within folk music, seen through his own eyes and heard through his own ears today, an album where Vegar has recorded his childhood traditions and tunes.
There are lively tunes from Lofoten, but also several intricate reinlenders from Åseral. You need to dance a springdans from Fjotland, you say? No problem, and we will throw in a polsdans from northern Norway at a comfortable pace as well. A sweet waltz makes us hold our partner ever closer, while the "Norafjøllsen" gangar makes us wonder if the road to the hereafter really is so long.
Inspiration from his mentors also finds its place on this album. Here we mention first and foremost his own father, Dag Vårdal, a folk music collector both in northern Norway and Agder. But we must not forget Sven Nyhus, his mentor for seven years at The Norwegian State Academy of Music. His duo with his fellow student Patrik Andersson has also left its mark, and Vegar's great passion for old archive recordings is also displayed in terms of tonality, form and style.
The album was released on ta:lik in collaboration with Kultivator AS, and a tunes book has also been published, where most of the tunes are transcribed and arranged for various ensembles. Vegar has created a solo concert out of this album, where he tells and gives examples of what has happened through his long life as a musician and dancer.
