Aslak Brimi Kvartett

New fiddle tunes with baritone saxophone, viola and cittern! Tightly woven and intricate! This is The Aslak Brimi Quartet. Led by Aslak Brimi from Lom, the line-up also consists of the fantastic Bjørn Kåre Odde (viola/fiddle), Svein Tore Werstad (saxphone) and Espen Wensaas (cittern/guitar).

There have always been many fiddlers in Lom who write their own tunes and Aslak Brimi continues this tradition. These are rhythmic and hypnotic tunes, inspired by the raw and powerful traditional springleiks and hallings from Gudbrandsdalen. But there are also fragile and naked melodies, calm tunes with simple and intimate arrangements.

Aslak Brimi from Lom is best known for collecting, sharing and performing traditional music from Ottadalen. His musical foundations come from playing in Lom Spelmannslag and he learnt from local fiddlers. Aslak Brimi is an active fiddler and has released many albums of traditional music, both as a performer and as a producer. The Aslak Brimi Quartet is, however, the first project which is centred around both him and his tunes.

Bjørn Kåre Odde has gone through the same schooling as Aslak within Lom Spelmannslag, but followed the path even further by studying at The Norwegian State Academy of Music. This has led him to become one of the best and most exciting musicians within the scene. Espen Wensaas plays a wide variety of plucked instruments. As a tunes player, he is one of the best, with a sound that is both distinctive and nuanced. Svein Tore Werstad and Aslak have played together for over 10 years. Springleik and baritone saxophone have proved to be a good match. Werstad has a rhythmic and melodic feeling to be envied. Together as a quartet, the instruments weave tightly together and it is intense and colourful.

The Aslak Brimi Quartet will soon be releasing its debut album and is ’pre-launching’ it at this year’s Folkelarm.
