Egil Kalman plays Norwegian and Swedish folk music on the modular synth.
Paying close attention to intonation and ornamentation in the source material, these details shine in a new light, with the sound of raw electricity amplifying the inherent trance inducing qualities of the music.
His music draws parallels between folk- and contemporary electroacoustic music via minimalist compositional techniques and free improvisation.
An LP with this material was released on Swedish label Supertraditional late 2025 and has recently received a grammy nomination in the category for best folk music. His previous two solo records are out on iDeal Recordings.
Besides his solo work he’s also active in several groups as a double bass player and synthesist, such as Marthe Lea Band, Miman, Völvur and in duos with Hans Hulbækmo and Fredrik Rasten.
