Golbma Jiena

Showcase 2017

Marja Mortensson, Katarina Barruk and Elina Waage Mikalsen are three of Sápmis foremost young vocalists. They were all awarded a scholarship as young artist of the year by Riddu Riđđu Festival and it was the Riddu Sessions project in 2016 that first brought them together. Following a successful collaboration project, which received a fantastic reception from the audience, they decided to turn the project into a band. In the winter of 2016, they were joined by Christo Stangness (bass) and Arnljot Nordvik (guitar), and started the band Golbma Jiena.

With their roots in Sami music, they combine different ways of making, thinking about and playing music. Their music is a fusion of pop melodies, joik, electronics and experimental use of the voice. The band has developed an original soundscape that has so far proven to take audiences by storm.

In addition to producing songs themselves, Golbma Jiena has also collaborated with Peder Niilas Tårnesvik, Sara Marielle Gaup Bieska and Ole Jørn Myklebust. This resulted in the EP Golbma Jiena with the song "Lelieh Åjldahttieh – Don’t Forget (feat. Niilas)" which was recommended by NRK P3 and played on the radio. The band has already played several concerts at, amongst others, Moscow International House of Music, at the 1st Barents People’s Indigenous Summit, and at festivals such as the Tromsø International Film Festival, the Oslo World Music Festival and the Migration Music Festival in Taipei, Taiwan.
